A wedding in Telengana  was cancelled by the bride at the last minute on Thursday because of lesser dowry given by the groom’s family. She demanded more than Rs 2 lakh  from the groom’s family in keeping with the tribe’s custom of ‘reverse dowry’ paid to prospective brides.

The wedding was scheduled on Thursday at Ghatkesar

near Hyderabad. The bride, who was to travel from her native Aswaraopet village refused to take the nuptial vows.

When the bride did not turn up at the wedding venue, the groom’s family rushed to the hotel, where her family was staying , and asked for an explanation. The groom’s family was then shocked when they were told the bride had sought more dowry.

The groom left the wedding venue and rushed to the police station along with his family.

The bride’s family was summoned after that.
According to the police , the matter was discussed between the families and they sorted it out.

“The two families sorted it out among themselves and the wedding was called off. No complaint was lodged and no one was booked. It turned out the bride was not interested in the marriage, so she tossed up a demand for more dowry and didn’t turn up at the ‘mandap’,” a police officer said.

Police said the bride’s family did receive Rs 2 lakh in dowry from the groom, but as the bride was adamant and firm in her decision, the money was returned by her family and both families parted their ways.
