While speaking at a virtual event that was organized to celebrate International Womenโs Day, CJI Ramana said that women should be given preference for appointments as panel advocates as it will increase their visibility before the Bench.
He further said that many good women lawyers give up the legal profession due to societal pressures and there is a need for enabling such an environment so women can pursue law as a career. He also pointed out that out of nearly 17 lakh lawyers in the country, only 15% are women.
He has been trying to correct the gender imbalance and said that out of the 9 vacancies at the Apex Court, 3 were filled by women judges.
He further said that the presence of women is more than a symbolic gesture as women bring a different perspective to the law which is necessary
Significantly, the CJI said that if giving women their due share is a revolution then he is happy to be called a revolutionary.
